Rare first-hand account by a ruthlessly efficient German sniper of life and death during the bitter conflict that followed the Nazi invasion of Russia. Josef 'Sepp' Allerberger was an Austrian conscript who qualified as a Wehrmacht machine-gunner and was drafter to the Southern sector of the Front in July 1942. After being wounded, he experimented successfully with a captured Russian sniper-rifle while convalescing and returned to his unit as his regiment's only sniper specialist. He became the second most successful German sniper and one of the very few private soldiers to be awarded the coveted Knights Cross. This harrowing and graphic memoir provides a vivid insight to the atrocious conditions and brutal cruelty of this campaign . . . no place for chivalry and few prisoners survived long after capture.

sepp is ranked 2nd in German sniper by P Senich book

i am oddly surprised by the reviewers who state that sepp is made up..
he is sited as the 2nd hightest sniper & was interviewed by w/ 2 other snipers in Peter Senich's the german sniper 1914-1945. So he had to be real.
Second, it's funny how reviewers state that no mention of german brutality. Odd that they dont ask that about Vietcong treatment by americans in Carlos hatchcock's book or other US centric military books ie enemy viewpoint.
so again because the guy is German, he has to be scolded? talk about double standards.

It gave me a gritting view of how bad it was on eastern front for the Germans and or the Russians to. One can try and judge these men that fought on the eastern front but bottom line they were just trying to survive the horror of war. Understand that both side had there points of view of what was right and what was wrong.

The "Real Story" of fighting on the Russian Front

This excellent account of the wartime experiences of German sniper "Sepp" Allerberger gives the real story of war on the Russian Front and the German retreat in 1944-1945. Snipers played a pivotal role in how army units functioned on a tactical level. While being important in both offense and defense the sniper was considered a hero and marksman to his friends but a cowardly murderer to his enemies. Fighting was far more brutal on the Russian Front because it witnessed the death-struggle between two opposing ideologies. Only problem is that the English translation is about 100 pages shorter than the original German edition and lacks many of the graphic pictures in Wacker's original.
