Too much political focus left me only partiallly interested

I enjoy a good pirate romance every once in a while, and this one got such good reviews that I was optimistic. I didn't dislike this book, but I don't care to reread it either. I am an avid rereader, so this tells you what I think about this book.
What I like:
I liked the exotic locals. They traveled from the Caribean to the middle east to Italy and byond all in one book. The descriptions of the locals were interesting. The crew was likeable. I liked that this wasn't a cookie cutter romance even though it is a pirate romance.
What I did not like:
There was so much political stuff going on that it dragged the pace of the book down. I found myslef skimming some of the political talks towards the end. I think the author could have the same situation without going into quite so much detail. The hero's lack of communication on why he could/would not get married annoyed me. The heroines views on her life and "living in sin" were a little too modern to me. I had a hard time believing that she would feel this way.
All in all it was a pretty good book for the price. It wasn't my favorite pirate romance but an ok read.

INCREDIBLE PIRATE SWASHBUCKLER!!!

In the tradition of Kathleen Woodiwiss and Judith MacNaught for the in-depth and emotional development of the two protagonists - this is by far one of the best written novels that I have come across. I agree - for a first - this supremely talented writer is on the way to the top.
MY WICKED PIRATE - is a grand epic and a truly outstanding novel. A sweeping saga that transports the reader across vast continents, sun-kissed coves, angry seas and an Arabian bazaar or two, the likes you would encounter in the 1001 Nights and Indiana Jones - this exotic and lavish novel will leave you breathless by its impact!
Sharon delivers with this captor/captive swashbuckler. Eros - a pirate/prince in hiding scours the seas plundering French vessels to vex the King of France. Alanis - the daughter of an English Duke is in one such vessel. After he abducts her - he uses her as a pawn to rescue his sister - who is imprisoned by the man she is engaged to. From the there - the story catapults the reader on an amazing adventure. Eros is a wounded and dangerous man - set on revenge - Alanis is the perfect foil for his cynicism, intellect and mystery. The two make the pages sizzle!!
With grand historical folklore and fabulous descriptions, characters that incredibly well developed, sexy scenes a plenty, incredible venues and great dialogue - (sprinkled liberally with doses of Italian and French) - this is a novel that I know you will enjoy as much as I did!

Too many contrived conflicts keep the couple apart. The surrounding story of political intrigue and danger didn't engage me.

STORY BRIEF:
Alanis lives with her grandfather the duke. Her parents died when she was 12. She has been engaged to Lucas for most of her life. Lucas has been away for several years with the British Navy. Alanis is tired of waiting so she sails to Jamaica to be with him. Along the way the pirate Eros attacks the ship and kidnaps her. Lucas has possession of Eros' sister Jasmine, and Eros plans to make a trade. Alanis realizes that she is attracted to Eros in ways she never felt with Lucas. Alanis also has a yearning to travel the world. Eros has been causing problems for King Louis XIV of France. Eros also has other enemies who want his possessions and death. Eros had drama in his youth which resulted in his inability to trust or love a woman. All of his relationships end with him leaving and the women in tears.
REVIEWER'S OPINION:
This is a long book with a lot of political intrigue, kidnappings, torture, escape, and battles. The romance is strangely frustrating. The couple is lustfully drawn to each other, but too many contrived conflicts keep them apart. The motivations for some of the things they say and do to each other are a mystery. He's passionate one minute and cold the next. He pretends to be with another woman just to hurt her. She lies to him to get him to do something. Their conflicts were not interesting. The surrounding story of danger and family history mysteries didn't appeal to me. Dialogue was ordinary. Nothing really set the story apart. I kept finding my self wanting to put it down and do something else. However there was one interesting part, Eros' strategy when leading an attack toward the end of the book.
A minor annoyance: the cover picture didn't match. Eros has hair tied in a queue, a crescent scar on his left temple, earrings, and a gold medallion. Cover guy had none of these.
