"Will Henry" was one of the bylines used by Henry Wilson Allen; the other was "Clay Fisher." A race against time

The spine logo calls it "Historical Fiction," but except for a solid placement in time (May, 1874) and some mention of the depression of the previous year, this book is really a classic Western. "Button" Starbuck, not quite 18, is the youngest of three sons--wild Brack and solid Doak are much older than he, and their father is in his 70's. A speculation on cattle made the year before suddenly looks as if it's going to make big profits for the Starbucks, and the man with whom Dad Starbuck contracted stands to lose a correspondingly big chunk of money. So he sends a bunch of gunslingers to the Starbuck ranch to get his contract back. Before the week is out, Button is the last of his family and engaged in a desperate race to get the cash needed to close the bargain, present it and the contract to the seller, and keep ahead of the gunmen who've been ordered to see him dead. His only allies are a roan mustang who'll die before he tires, and a 16-year-old half-Mexican, half-Apache girl who becomes his companion for the last leg of the run to Lampasas.
Of course since Button is telling the story in first person, you feel pretty sure he's going to somehow elude or destroy his enemies, but the suspense comes in seeing how he does it and how many narrow escapes he has in the meantime--while also having to grow up in a big hurry, since, as he admits, his father and brothers have tended to baby him a bit. He's never even fired a gun in anger in his life. Yet by fast thinking, outrageous good luck, and the help of a very honorable old Mexican and the unexpected side-switching of one of the gunmen, he succeeds in saving his family's fortunes and sees their killers dead--although, disappointingly, it looks as if the power behind them will never pay as he should. Will Henry, an award-winning author who was very well known in his day, has a distinct and unmistakeable voice and sometimes an almost poetical style, although Button's and May Otero's more-or-less love-at-first-sight seems a bit improbable to me. It's not a great Western, but it's satisfying and written without any desire to shock, as many of the newer examples aren't.

MUSTANGS and BULLETS

This is a well written novel concerning the love of horses, family and revenge for loss of life. A very enjoyable fast read. I will be reading more from this writer.

Some western tales never get old

Despite the fact that this story was written a long time ago it still provides an interesting, although somewhat predictable, western tale. A fun read.
