Interesting Vintage Sattement on Liberty and Government

I purchased this book as I continue my study of the history of liberty. John Locke (1632-1704) was an Englishman who was one of the major figures in western governmental theory, and specifically, the concept of government by consent and refutation of the so-called "divine right of kings".
I purchased the 202 Dover Thrift Reprint edition of this little book, and it also included Locke's 1689 "A Letter Concerning Toleration".
The Treatise is a explanation of Locke's beliefs on liberty, monarchy, the origin of property rights, and government by consent of the people. Locke was read by some of America's Founders, and some of its ideas probably influenced Thomas Jefferson. Locke could be considered a proto-libertarian of sorts, although he did not take his theory of liberty as far Jefferson did -and certainly not as far as modern libertarians do. While Locke's work was very good (and daring) for the time period and political regime he lived under, his theory falls short of the ideals of the American revolution. Locke's Treatise was worth reading, and did provoke some thought on my part on one issue that I had not taken back to its base theory. As I am a "limited government libertarian" who supports the U.S. Constitution and Bill of rights, I believe that Locke left a bit too much power in the hands of the state.
I found it interesting that the phrase "an appeal to heaven", which was used by some American patriots on "pine tree" flags during the American Revolution, apparently originated in this book.
Locke's letter concerning religious toleration, originally published in 1689, was also worth reading. Locke advocated for full religious liberty not only for all sects of Christians, but also for Pagans, Mahometans (an old English term he uses for Muslims), and even Jews. Interestingly, Locke did not support toleration of atheists, because he felt their rejection of the concept of a god would lead them to reject all morality and then commit crime. Locke considered himself a Christian and quotes Scripture frequently. Locke does not state what if any denomination or doctrinal creed his beliefs may have confirmed to. Based on one relatively quick reading of his Letter, I would guess that he may have been some variation of Arminian Protestant.
This book was written over 300 years ago, and the style of English 9and the length of sentences) is not what today's readers will be used to. This is not bad, only different. I gie this book 4 stars. This book is worth reading, but I would advise reading some of America's Founding Fathers before one takes the time to read this.

The Second Treatise of Government...(Locke)

The book arrived quicker than I expected, and in excellent condition. Very good service. It is important for my collection, and necessary to a grass-roots effort I'm involved in with others in Jackson County, AL-- the goal of cleaning out corruption in local government. Today Jackson County, tomorrow the State of Alabama, then on to Washington, D.C. When all that is cleaned up, I will have been in Heaven a long time, but my grandchildren may be able to live free!
