Theodore Kaczynski, also known as the Unabomber, is a United States murderer, mathematician, and neo-Luddite social critic who carried out a campaign of mail bombings. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, where, as an intellectual child prodigy, he excelled academically from an early age.

Beginning at the age of sixteen, Kaczynski participated along with twenty-one other undergraduate students in the Harvard experiments, which have been described as "disturbing" and "ethically indefensible."

A considerable amount of credible circumstantial evidence suggests that Kaczynski was the unwitting victim of top secret CIA-sponsored 'MK-ULTRA' mind-control experiments conducted at Harvard University from the fall of 1959 through the spring of 1962. Some experts suggest that these experiments may have been the cause of his emotional problems.

Kaczynski eventually received an undergraduate degree from Harvard University and earned a PhD in mathematics from the University of Michigan. He became an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley at age 25 but resigned two years later.

In 1971, he moved to a remote cabin without electricity or running water, in Lincoln, Montana, where he began to learn survival skills in an attempt to become self-sufficient.

He decided to start his bombing campaign after watching the wilderness around his home get destroyed by development.

From 1978 to 1995, Kaczynski sent 16 bombs to targets including universities and airlines, killing three people and injuring 23. Kaczynski sent a letter to The New York Times on April 24, 1995 and promised "to desist from terrorism" if the Times or The Washington Post published his manifesto. In his Industrial Society and Its Future (also called the "Unabomber Manifesto"), he argued that his bombings were extreme but necessary to attract attention to the erosion of human freedom necessitated by modern technologies requiring large-scale organization.

The Unabomber was the target of one of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) most costly investigations. Before Kaczynski's identity was known, the FBI used the handle "UNABOM" ("UNiversity and Airline BOMber") to refer to his case, which resulted in the media calling him the Unabomber.

Despite the FBI's efforts, he was not caught as a result of this investigation. Instead, his brother recognized Ted's style of writing and beliefs from the manifesto, and tipped off the FBI. To avoid the death penalty, Kaczynski's lawyers entered into a plea agreement, under which he pled guilty and was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole.

5 stars for the essays, 1 star for the editing! Full of typos.

FIRST, the essays. This book contains four of Theodore Kaczynski's essays: 1) an unnamed 1971 essay on the dangers of technology and dehumanization; 2) "When Non-Violence is Suicide"; 3) a more recent (from prison) essay entitled "Hit Where It Hurts"; 4) the so-called Unabomber Manifesto, "Industrial Society and Its Future".

Because of mass-media hype, I had been led to believe all these years that Ted Kaczynski was a raving lunatic, and was expecting to find a lot of vitriol. On the contrary: his essays are organized, calm, and well-thought-out.

The main thrust of the essays is that increasing technology necessarily creates increased regulation on everything we do. Additionally, the system ALWAYS benefits itself, ALWAYS at the cost of human freedom and dignity. Furthermore, this process is not always obviously malevolent. Kaczynski asserts that most technologies are introduced with benign intention (for example, the automobile and genetic engineering) and are so irresistible that we jump right on them, unable to see the disastrous, increasingly restrictive results of those technologies (in the automobile analogy, it's unsafe to walk anywhere now, and drivers find themselves boxed in by a lot of regulations). The author illustrates his points with numerous historical examples and names some sources for his information.

Kaczynski clearly states his case, and explains how well-meaning psychologists, educators, journalists, etc., feed the system by tailoring children's attitudes to fit the system. If the system needs more technicians, we force children into years of science curricula, when their natural inclination is to be outside and explore. We also label more and more quirks "disorders" in order to drug our kids to conform to the system. (He also has this weird thing about Sylvan Learning Centers.)

Kaczynski also warns against the dangers of leftism, which he considers a symptom of modern man's failed struggle in what he terms the "power process" (goal + effort + attainment of goal). He presents clear explanations for how leftism easily slips into totalitarianism. He explains other aspects of human nature, on which he has some interesting opinions.

The unnamed 1971 essay and the "manifesto" are both about the above.

"Hit Where It Hurts" is a warning to radicals who want to bring down the techno-industrial system NOT to keep throwing themselves at minor or side issues that will NOT bring down the system. For example, they focus on the lumber/timber industry, which is completely useless, for even if the entire lumber industry were to be shut down forever, the techno-industrial system would go on. Same for attacking the fur trade. He likens these issues to cutting off the tip of a giant octopus's tentacle.

"When Non-Violence is Suicide" is a very short essay whose thesis is, "Nonviolence works only when you have the police to protect you. In the absence of police protection, nonviolence is very nearly the equivalent to suicide." He provides a short story illustrating this point. It is written with the assumption that the system WILL collapse, that the collapse is imminent, and citizens must prepare themselves for it. A little over-the-top, but still worth reading.

I strongly recommend the essays. Even if you don't agree with Dr. Kaczynski, you have to admit the writing is top-notch.

NOW FOR THE EDITING...
This edition is full of glaring, sometimes context-changing typos. I thought I could tolerate the errors for the price of 99 cents. I was wrong. The mistakes really started to irritate me.

Here are some examples--not even the worst:

"The Roman system of urban sanitation was forgotten, so that until rather recent times did the sanitation of European cities that of Ancient Rome."

"The activists will never be satisfied until tobacco is outlawed, and after that it will be alco hot then junk food, etc."

You will have to decide whether to pay less and deal with the typos, or pay more and get a bigger, less mistake-ridden collection.

Worth the read, if you can get past the formatting.

The content of the manifesto is quite fascinating in places and at a level of eloquence I did not expect. It's definitely worth a read for anyone willing to take a brutally honest look at our society. However, the Kindle version I purchased was so full of typos and misplaced/duplicated text, that it detracted from the overall reading experience.
