About the Author
JUDY REENE SINGER is a dressage competitor, horse trainer, and all-around animal lover. She is a frequent contributor to international animal rescues and is currently foster mother to two elephant babies. Judy has written about the equestrian world for more than a decade, and was named top feature writer by The Chronicle of the Horse in 1996. She holds degrees in English and psychology, shares her home with cats and dogs, horses, and an African gray parrot, and enjoys making her friends and family fat with baked goodies.

Mutual healing but unrealistic

I enjoyed this book and found it funny and sometimes provocative. The main character, Neelie, has great success with rescuing and healing animals. In fact, she has difficulty hearing what humans are literally saying to her. Neelie's life changing trauma begins really in her childhood with her horse Homer and she finally does confront the pain it has caused. As an adult, a social worker and animal trainer, she finds out via her husband's lover that the lover (a vet) is going to have his baby. The husband is also a vet and the reader easily regards him as dolt when it comes to business and fidelity.
Neelie understandably is distraught and Singer is superb describing the myriad of changes and feelings she undergoes during this heartbreaking marital breakup. She loses her husband, her home and her self-esteem. She finds herself in healing elephants, baby elphants. The hero of the story is a very wealthy, well known businessman who also establishes sanctuaries in the US and Africs. He is perfect and loves her. He allows her to take her time and find herself. He has the money, the looks and the sensitivity and he asks her to marry him. Her response is unrealistic, Singer made her into a very lucky woman at the end of her angst, but I really believ1e any woman would have grabbed this Prince Charming in Paris or Kenya!

Like A Great Jelly Doughnut!

Like a great jelly doughnut, "Still Life With Elephant", is light, sweet, and even a bit addictive. I truly could not put it down. This book gave me new insight into my eldest daughter, who has the same gift with horses as Neelie (the book's main character), and I loved the interaction between Neelie and her "babies" (the animals she loves and lives for). I learned so much, and I couldn't agree more with her description of Africa as being a state of mind, rather than a continent. Having been there myself, I found myself inarticulate as to how to describe it to friends, and now I will borrow that term. It is really true. I also identified totally with being in a "quantum state of mind". Sometimes I feel that we all live there more often than any place else. The only drawback to the book was the rather forced and unnatural "happily ever after" romance, I felt that the author put that in for the readers who needed it, or perhaps for a future movie. It rang very untrue to me, and it was almost a distraction to the rest of the book. Other than that, bravo! I loved it!

Light entertainment

I have read both this book and Horseplay. Ms. Singer writes an entertaining book that's enjoyable to follow. But the stakes for her heroines are never really that high, or at least they do not stay high for long. Singer heroines have troubled marriages, but immediately find wealthy handsome new husband material. Opportunities to keep their essential lives together arise immediately-there's never any true worry that they're going to starve on the streets or have no roofs over their heads. Lot of farcical elements to the books,as well, that can be funny at first but then annoying or too unrealistic. Best moments are when work with the animals is described. Fun fluff.
