Outstanding history of Verdun

The Price of Glory is one of the best histories I've read in months--and as a graduate student in history, I have been inundated with books of such varying quality that something as good as this must stand out. Horne's history of the Battle of Verdun has it all: political intrigue, grand strategy, shocking battlefield horror and some truly moving stories of guts--and glory.

Verdun had been a relatively quiet sector until 1916, when the German army attacked and nearly overwhelmed the French army units holding the line there. The defenses were centered on a string of disused fortresses, and it became the German army's all-consuming obsession to capture these fortresses. The battle almost immediately stalled when the Germans found they could not move their artillery over the bombed-out landscape they had created, and so the Battle of Verdun turned into a contest of attrition, with each side throwing numbers and materiel at the other until someone cried "uncle."

It is part of Horne's purpose constantly to remind us of the tremendous loss of life on both sides, and of the stupidity with which war during World War I was waged. He draws very colorful depictions of the major figures involved, including the almost bovine Marshal Joffre of the French army--soon to be relieved by Petain--the eerily impersonal Feldmarschal Falkenhayn, who commanded the German attack, and even the "minor" players who took and retook positions from one another. But the book is not only a well-written, informative history, it is also exciting. A number of passages describing hotly contested moments on the battlfield--such as two incidents involving attacks on the French fortresses by German shock troops--are as thrilling as any novels I've read.

If the book has any one flaw, it is that, while Horne points out that Verdun was the longest battle in the war--and perhaps in history--he focuses primarily on the first few months of the ten-month ordeal. One wishes he had fleshed out the final months in more detail, but the book is otherwise so good that this seems like a minor quibble.

The Price of Glory is a thrilling and informative history of one of the most brutal and tragic battles in world history.

A glorious book about a tragic battle

If you want to understand World War I, this book about the battle of Verdun is a must-read.

A history professor once told me that World War I, the French Revolution, and the U.S. Constitution had inspired more history than any other events or episodes. World War I exhausted Europe; at the outset, its armies, navies and colonies held dominion over much of the globe, but at the end it was a pauper continent, with both victors and vanquished shattered by deaths and debts, reparations and revolutions. And Verdun marked a pivotal moment in this transformation, for here the generals revealed that they had too few ideas about how to win--but too many men still to feed into the meatgrinder.

Because of battles like Verdun, many associate World War I with images and episodes straight from "All Quiet on the Western Front" or "Paths of Glory"--futile attacks and counterattacks, weary and shell-shocked men running across pulverized land only to be killed or maimed by mass-produced bullets and explosives, victims of Europe's collective skill at the industries of war. In this meta-narrative, the perpetrators of this mass slaughter remain hidden, distant, aloof, living in idyllic chateaux miles away from the mud and the blood, their actions either inscrutable or idiotic.

Horne pulls back the curtain to reveal the character and personality of those generals, showing their unique strengths and weaknesses and how those character traits played themselves out in one of the greatest battles in human history. By writing so well about the decision-makers, he makes the churned earth and spilled blood more tragic--and more understandable. Verdun, a battle Horne describes "the battlefield with the highest density of dead per square yard that has probably ever been known" was by all accounts a supreme test of wills for both France and Germany. In Horne's hands, though, it becomes something more tangible and real, a clash not just of armies, but of people.

In addition to the excellent human descriptions, though, Horne writes wonderfully and vividly about the scenes of the battle. Some authors and books wring the life out of historical events, turning them into stale words on dead paper. But Horne brings this monstrous battle to life, vividly describing the claustrophobic underground tunnels of shell-battered Fort Douamont and the clutching terror of phosgene gas. Horne takes a catastrophic battle of mind-boggling proportions and makes it all too real.

The Battle of Verdun in all its Horror

"The Price of Glory: Verdun 1916" is a great work of military history that examines one of the most brutal, terror-filled episodes in one of the most brutal, terror-filled wars in human history. Horne's account of this battle is well written and easily accessible without sacrificing the depth and detail necessary for a true understanding of this engagement.

By late 1915, with its armies in virtual deadlock with its enemies throughout Europe, Germany decides upon a bold gamble. Conceived by General von Falkyenhayn, the German Army Chief-of-Staff, the attack upon the French fortress city of Verdun was prepared to break the stalemate. The objective of this battle was as chilling as it was desperate: Germany could afford to lose more men than France, hence the attack would not be one to achieve a 'breakthrough' or to capture some vital sector of the line, the battle would be one of attrition, one which was designed to bleed the French Army dry before it bled the German Army dry. Horne chronicles this plan and the opening moves as the German Crown Prince leads his army into the cauldron.

Horne expertly relates the many stories of heroism and folly within this battle; from the surprise storming of one French fortress to the hopeless but valiant defense of another; from the reshuffling of German commanders to the creation of a supply system for the besieged town; from the desperate realization by the Germans that the plan is not working to the even more desperate French realization that their line could fall apart at any minute.

This is an important book about one of the bloodiest chapters in human history and a necessary component to any World War I education. Highly recommended.

Enchanting!

It is Elizabeth's thirty-fifth birthday and she doesn't have much to celebrate. She is a baker and due to a screw up has to bake her cheating ex-husband's wedding cake for his new wedding. Things change fast when her grandmother gives her the gift of magic and now Elizabeth has an extra ingredient to add to all of her baked goodies.

This story is so fun! I fell in love with all of the characters right away. It is a satisfying, funny, and enchanting story that made me laugh in so many places. I'm already anticipating the next book! I recommend A Taste of Magic to readers who enjoy the lighter side of paranormal.

These are the questions that arise for bakery owner, Elizabeth Stevens. She and her friend, Jon own A Taste of Magic Bakery. It has been a big year for Elizabeth as she is turning thirty-sex. Her ex-husband is getting married to the woman he cheating on Elizabeth with. Plus, they hired Elizabeth to bake their wedding cake. Elizabeth swallows her pride because one simple sell can help her bakery and repay the loan her lousy ex-husband Marc gave to her to keep the bakery going while they were still married.

Elizabeth's eighty-five year old grandmother Verda gives her an extra special birthday gift. It seems that their family is from a long line of gypsies and now Elizabeth has this magic she can use in the treats she bakes. She makes a wish for the person she bakes a desert for and when they eat it, the wish will come true for them. With a bit of this and a bit of that, Elizabeth can change a person's life, but she must be careful because there are consequences to her actions.

Not only is Elizabeth trying to figure out how to use this new ability of hers, but her dry spell in the romance department is over. Her new next door neighbor is Nate, a police officer, who first meets her under the most embarrassing of situations (she was drunk, couldn't find her apartment key and got stuck trying to climb through her bathroom window) is very interested in Elizabeth. Then there is her personal trainer, Kevin the gym hunk, who wouldn't mind helping Elizabeth work out in other ways, such as some bedroom aerobics.

With two men courting her, an ex-husband who won't leave her alone and her magic spells that do more damage than good, Elizabeth wonders how her life has become so out of control and how she can bring it back on track.

A Taste of Magic is a cute read that has its moments of hilarity. Tracy Madison has written some engaging characters and Elizabeth is a woman you can sympathize with. I liked how Tracy wrote the interactions with Elizabeth and her family and friends. It was also fun the see how Elizabeth juggles both Nate and Kevin, but at times the use of her magic becomes bit too much and almost overtakes the story. If that was toned down a bit and Tracy had stuck more to the relationship side of things, A Taste of Magic would have been a much better read. Overall I think most readers won't mind and don't be surprised if you will be hitting up your own bakery for a few muffins or cupcakes after finishing reading.

Madison has created the best possible world--just like the one we live in, but with magic. I love books like that that make me believe I could one day experience magic, too. Her characters are identifiable and real, people I'd love to be friends (or more!) with, living through circumstances that make you think "there but for the grace of God go I." I cannot recommend this book enough.

For more than a century, the confused and highly inflammatory history of former Yugoslavia has been the subject of numerous books, many of them rife with revisionist history and propaganda. The peoples of the Balkans live on the border of three worlds: the Islamic, the orthodox Slavic East, and Catholic Europe, and as such they stand in the path of major world conflicts that are not only geo-political but fundamentally spiritual. This novel cuts to the core question: how does a person retain his identity, indeed his humanity, in absolutely dehumanizing situations?

In the life of the central character, the author demonstrates that this will demand suffering and sacrifice, heroism and even holiness. When he is twelve years old, his entire world is destroyed, and so begins a lifelong Odyssey to find again the faith which the blows of evil have shattered. The plot takes the reader through Josip's youth, his young manhood, life under the Communist regime, hope and loss and unexpected blessings, the growth of his creative powers as a poet, and the ultimate test of his life. Ultimately this novel is about the crucifixion of a soul—and resurrection.

Island of the World

Michael D. O'Brien is truly a gifted writer. During the last several weeks that I spent reading this phenomonal book I felt like I was in the skin of the main character, Josip Lasta. I have rarely, if ever, been so emotionally involved in reading and had to keep telling myself, "it's only a book". I shed so many tears I had to put the book away for a time and told myself to "forgadbout it" (an expression of one of his many characters in the book).

Mr. O'Brien's descriptions of the agony and the rising of Josip Lasta are unparalleld in any book I've ever read and shows profound insight into the inner workings of his character's mind, body and spirit. This book deserves to be #1 on every bestseller list. I intend to gift several friends with a copy and to tell all the readers I know to read it.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this large novel, but I didn't expect something that made me look at my own life a little closer.

O'Brien does a perfect job drawing the reader into the life of his characters. I found myself identifying with Josip Lasta even though we have very little in common. Throughout the entire novel, I couldn't wait to find out what happens to Josip next. I had to keep reading to find out if he finally achieves and keeps happiness.

The tales of life under a series of totalitarian regimes made me feel grateful for my freedoms, and reminded me to be more active in preserving them. Josip's grappling with faith was inspiring, and caused me to ponder my own spirituality at length. I tried--as best I could from a novel--to learn from how Josip interacted with the people in his life. All of it put together left me thinking, and wishing I could go right back into the book and recapture the joy of first discovery.

I highly recommend this book if you enjoy thought provoking, deep stories where the true meaning may take a bit of consideration to unearth.

Excellent! Should become a classic. I have read all of his other novels and they are also excellent. He is the greatest novelist and storyteller of our times and Josip Lasta (the main character)is an example of moral courage and character in overcoming life's trials. Should be assigned reading for all high school students.

Glimpses of Life in Lark Rise and Candleford

Though Flora Thompson is a vivid writer who can bring life in the small British villages of the 1880's and '90's into sharp focus, there is far too much time spent on anecdotes about a host of characters that pass through the life of Laura, the main character of the book, without really building to a climax of a real story of her life and the changes in it. There is ample mention of Laura's future, and that of her brother Edmund, but the story stops abruptly at the end of Laura's stay in Candleford. However, it is through the glimpses into the lives of these various characters that we really do get a clear vision of what life was like for the inhabitants of Lark Rise and Candleford. Further, it surprises me that practically no one in either village went to the cities to work in the factories of the Industrial Revolution, although it is clear that everyone in those villages found other kinds of work and knew that life in the cities was far below that lived in those two villages. All in all, it was a wonderful historical experience reading this trilogy.

I loved the show, I hated the book. I kept waiting for the characters to develop but they never did. I did not finish this book. It sits on the cloud, destined to stay there forever
