Call of the Mountains- Will you answer?

I always thought of John Muir as a cave dwelling curmudgeon, a strange loner and aloof mountain man.
That is how he has been depicted many times. Here I found him to be one of the most interesting people that I have ever read about. He was kind, generous, good humored, brilliant, inventive, resourceful, well educated, and an established business man. He preferred the wilderness and could spend long times away from home in the mountains. He could easily spend three days snowed in after a bad storm near a mountain top, and find real joy in that. What was he thinking all of those hours?
Muir, having passed away before the writing of this book in 1944, was not available to be interviewed by the author, yet his children, grandchildren, and many protégés were alive and could relate the many experiences that they had with this remarkable man. Muir was also a prolific author, so the author had many of his manuscripts to look over. The author won the Pulitzer Prize for her efforts, and this book is still considered by many to be “The standard Muir biography.”
I would be surprised if I read a better biography than this in 2015.

Muir Worship

This is a great book. The writing flows well, it is super interesting, and very informative about John Muir's life. It is the secondary source authority for the general subject of John Muir. Only criticism- the author seems to have a slight case of Muir worship, she puts all of his actions in a flattering light.
