Attempts for middle ground - Hurray! - though flawed

Mixed.
Thank goodness Pickover had the guts to write a book about black holes and include some equations! The theory of black holes is inherently mathematical, so it is very welcome to read a book that tries to bridge the gap between popularization in words only versus full-on mathematical physics.
But you'll have to be patient, not only to work through the math, but to put up with flaws that an editor should have fixed. On p. 56, Pickover offers two equations, and tries to help the reader feel comfortable with them, despite their apparent complexity. But, if you get out a pencil and simplify the algebra, each equation actually reduces to something much simpler. Unfortunately, the first equation reduces all the way to z = r. That can't be right, because the equation is supposed to describe a circle. In the end, I learned something by doing the math to find the problem. I am half grateful, but half scornful.
As others have pointed out, Pickover mixes mathematical directness - actually showing equations - with behind-the-back "simplifications", such as changing to non-standard units. In another example, Pickover describes a rotating black hole as "lemon-shaped", then in the notes, he says the black hole isn't lemon-shaped, but he since couldn't think of a fruit that was hamburger-shaped, he just went with lemon. If you're not on your toes, the simplifications can confuse you more than the math itself.
Similarly, Pickover's gimmick to lighten up the presentation by featuring you as a space captain ordering about your underling is awkward to the point of grating, but at least he tried.
I'd have to say this book was not really ready to publish, but I am getting a lot out of it that I can't find in other books, despite the substantial flaws.

For over five years I've been a fond of classic physics, cuantic physics, cosmology and astrophysics. I've read the books of some of the greatest writers of these branches of science, among which I remember Stephen Hawking, Paul Davies, Roger Penrose, Albert Einstein, etc. All of these books are very complete if we talk about the information exposed by them, but they have a common characteristic (I don't know whether is a defect in fact), is highly recommendable to have a certain level of scientific knowledge in order to make good use of its content. The book featured by Clifford A. Pickover "Black Holes: A traveler's guide" is totally different to those that I've read before. Is a complete, funny and, overcoat, is easily understandable by anybody. At the beginning of each chapter there are presented dialogs (between the reader and an alien called Mr. Plex) with the purpose of giving the main idea of what is coming up next. In the same way, almost all chapters make reference to simple formulas that describe the most relevant aspects about the behavior of black holes. Besides the main subject (black holes), the author took charge of showing in a briefly manner another "not less important" subjects of astrophysics and cosmology. I had never understood many of the formulas presented until I read this book. When you begin to read it, you begin a journey to the marvelous structure of one of the strangest and most fascinating things in the whole universe, a black hole. Is the best book that I've ever seen about this topics and I believe that somebody difficultly overcome the clear, precise and funny style of writing of Clifford A. Pickover. The term "black hole" was coined by the Princeton physicist John Archibald Wheeler. What, exactly, a black hole is (if there even is such a thing) has been a source of debate and confusion for decades. Clifford Pickover inserts you as the main character of this book. You are on a spaceship (complete with aliens) way the heck in the future & your ship is near a black hole. So, you & your friends decide to do a close (literally) study of the cosmic anomaly.
The story is entertaining & has many didactic features. Pickover also inserts some humor so as to make the book enjoyable as opposed to a dense treatise of rather complex mathematical concepts. Also, at the end of each chapter is a section called "The science behind the science fiction." It is a detailed account of what we presently know (or think we know) about the notions which were presented in the narrative.
And, the concepts are many. We learn of various weird things that happen in & near a black hole, such as time slowing, the "shrinking" of one's perspective due to the singularity & the mind-numbing gravitational power which is projected by black holes.....a gravity field so immense that the escape velocity exceeds light speed. We learn how black holes were predicted by Einstein's theory of Relativity as well as how the many principles of quantum mechanics come into the picture when one is attempting to understand the nature of singularities.
Much of this book is speculation, but it is educated speculation. The conjectures on what happens inside of a singularity, as well as the possiblity of wormholes which lead to other universes & dimensions is exciting & based on our best available current knowledge of the cosmos. As an added bonus, there is a chapter in the back of the book in which many of the world's leading cosmologists answer questions posed by the author on various topics about & related to black holes. There are also computer animation pictures of some of the more dazzling geometrical effects that are generated by black holes. For anyone who is planning to visit a black hole anytime soon, this book is a must.

Another good read for those interested in alternative methods of heating your home

I love Mother Earth News. I've bought many good books and magazines over the years and have never been disappointed!! I would love nothing better than being off the grid, however, that's not possible for me at this point so I'm doing what I can to use other alternatives to electricity and gas when I can. Solar ovens work especially great in the summertime when it's too hot to cook indoors and spare the air days make standing outdoors over a smoking hot BBQ less than appealing. Heating my home with alternative methods is the next step.

This has all 48 Feeling etudes for sax or oboe in a solid, well published book. It also comes with some duets/trips for oboes or saxophones. However this is the "1st oboe" or "1st sax" part so if you want to play the duets with others, they have to have the other part to play it. The paper inside the copy is the same kind that this publisher used for all its big book scores: its a bit dark and thin, but pencil writes well on it. A good purchase. Every serious sax player should study these etudes.

...And now, what is this spirit which, for an intelligent mind, binds together these scattered fragments into a whole, and what is its actual power? I cannot tell; but I feel to this day just as I felt to the innermost depths of my heart in the days of my youth when I first heard a symphony of Beethoven's, — that a spirit breathes from it bearing us aloft with giant power out of the oppressive atmosphere of sense, stirring to its inmost recesses the heart of man, bringing him to the full consciousness of his loftier being, and of the undying within him. And even more distinctly than when a new world was thus disclosed to his youthful feelings is the man fully conscious that not only was this a new world to him, but a new world of feeling in itself, revealing to the spirit phases of its own, which, till Beethoven appeared, had never before been fathomed. Call it by what name you will, when one of the great works of the sublime master is heard, whether indicative of proud self-consciousness, freedom, spring, love, storm, or battle, it grasps the soul with singular force, and enlarges the laboring breast. Whether a man understands music or not, every one who has a heart beating within his breast will feel with enchantment that here is concentrated the utmost promised to us by the most imaginative of our poets, in bright visions of happiness and freedom. Even the only great hero of action, who in those memorable days is worthy to stand beside the great master of harmony, having diffused among mankind new and priceless earthly treasures, sinks in the scale when we compare these with the celestial treasures of a purified and deeper feeling, and a more free, enlarged, and sublime view of the world, struggling gradually and distinctly upwards out of the mere frivolity of an art devoid of words to express itself, and impressing its stamp on the spirit of the age. They convey, too, the knowledge of this brightest victory of genuine German intellect to those for whom the sweet Muse of Music is as a book with seven seals, and reveal, likewise, a more profound sense of Beethoven's being to many who already, through the sweet tones they have imbibed, enjoy some dawning conviction of the master's grandeur, and who now more and more eagerly lend a listening ear to the intellectual clearly worded strains so skilfully interwoven, thus soon to arrive at the full and blissful comprehension of those grand outpourings of the spirit, and finally to add another bright delight to the enjoyment of those who already know and love Beethoven. All these may be regarded as the objects I had in view when I undertook to edit his Letters, which have also bestowed on myself the best recompense of my labors, in the humble conviction that by this means I may have vividly reawakened in the remembrance of many the mighty mission which our age is called on to perform for the development of our race, even in the realm of harmony, — more especially in our Father-land.

About the Author

Constance O'Banyon is a native Texan who makes her home in San Antonio with her husband, Jim and their son, Jason. Her books range from historical to contemporary and include several novellas. I love this saga!

I'm a high school history teacher, and I can tell that a lot of research went into this series. Readers will learn about Egyptian and Roman politics and history in the time of Queen Cleopatra, but the history never gets in the way of the love story. Though it can stand alone, DAUGHTER OF EGYPT is a continuation of the story begun in LORD OF THE NILE and SWORD OF ROME, where members of a noble Egyptian family find their destinies against the backdrop of palace, marketplace, desert and an island paradise. Thalia, the feisty heroine, was the precocious young urchin who was adopted into the Tasrat family in SWORD OF ROME.

I agree with one of the previous reviewers, who praised the book, MARA, DAUGHTER OF THE NILE. It has been one of my favorites since junior high, and is still an enjoyable read for me as an adult. However, comparing DAUGHTER OF EGYPT and MARA is like comparing apples and oranges. MARA, a book about the 18th Dynasty, takes place over 1000 years before DAUGHTER OF EGYPT.

I hope Constance O'Banyon continues to write on ancient Egypt and Rome.

terrific ancient historical romance

In 44 BC at a Roman marketplace, Thalia tries to steal food, but is seen. She flees hiding behind a noble woman who says nothing to her pursuers. The wealthy Egyptian Lady Adhania takes the street urchin home with her to raise her as her daughter. Over time she forgot her beggar existence across the Mediterranean until in 36 BC a one-eyed man, who had stalked her years earlier in Rome, kidnaps her. Frightened, she becomes further shocked when warrior Count Ashtyn kidnaps her.

Thalia cannot fathom why the sudden interest in her. She soon learns the answer to her question when Ashtyn takes her to the island kingdom Bal Forea where she is Princess Thalia and soon to be Queen and Ashtyn her husband the king.

Almost a decade since the events of LORD OF THE NILE and SWORD OF ROME, DAUGHTER OF EGYPT is a terrific ancient historical romance that starts in Rome, moves to Egypt, and ends up on an island. Thalia is a brave person who learned to adapt to the situation as a beggar while the courageous Ashyny proves her equal willing to die to keep her safe. As with the previous two historical tales, this excellent entry that uses real persona like Antony and Cleopatra bring to life the Mediterranean in the first century BC.

Maybe her best yet!

Dynamic story!! Best of three in the Egyptian Series so far...I do hope this brings more stories to light. I can't seem to get enough of Constance's passion for historical writings on the subject of my favorite heroines and heros.
Please Constance, keep them coming!!

First Constance gave us "Lord of the Nile", where Denae' and her handsome hero Lord Ramtat took up arms and took in love across the times in Rome, then there was "Sword of Rome", the story of Danae's now sister-inlaw Adhania and her beloved hero, Macellus, the Roman general and warrior of his day. Leaving us with the street urchin called Thalia, whom Adhania rescued in the streets of Rome as a child. But who was Thalia really? This book creates the atmosphere that pulls in all of our favored characters from book one and two--in a fight for her life, Thalia will meet yet another hero, another general--another man just like the one's her adopted sister and sister-inlaw married in the two earlier books...a warrior, that will not give up until he sees Thalia in her rightful position on a small island called Bal, Forea....the new home of the fallen city of ??(Won't give spoilers)! Buy the book and find out!!

Be prepared to fall in love with Thalia, eighteen and hardly ready to stand on her own two feet in a strange speaking land. She decides to take it upon herself to reunite the people, just as her Queen and family memeber Cleopatra would have done....And then watch her rise above her duty, in order to save the island people from hunger and war...Constance, finally comes through on her exotic sexual expression in this novel as well, which makes this novel shine past the previous books (which I loved too), to bring us devoted and lavishing love scenes worth reading-over and over! Come hide in the passions of love, honor, and betrayal in "Daughter of Egypt"!

O'banyon's third book of the Egyptian herione series is possibly her best book yet, with wonderfully created characters, an intriguing tale of great historical value that carries the erotic love, honor, courage, and betrayal. A winner!
