A problem emerges in the advances of modern communication where people are able to more rapidly post anonymously information that can be read by many more people than in the past. This can allow for more creative voices to rise, and it can lead to more destructive voices being heard.

The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were a defining moment for our entire country. It united us, yet that unity was a delicate one. The author believes this unity has fallen apart and she attributes it to an overconfident national Republican leadership that did not believe it needed help and support from those outside its inner circles by reaching out to Democrats and to Democrats that became critical of the actions by the Republican leadership. The nation fell into a partisan divide. Noonan believes the Bush Administration make a mistake by encouraging supporters to bash opponents before the press, the Internet, on blogs, etc. This contributed to the widening of the divide of the political divide. She notes that 60 percentage points was the difference between the percent of Republicans who supported the Iraq War and the percent of Democrats who supported the Iraq War.

Noonan, a self-described "Reagan Republican", believes the Bush Administration destroyed a reputation that Republicans had spent a half century building on foreign policy matters. The author supports the war in Iraq but believes that Bush failed to properly explain the need to go to war. The Bush White House issued its sentiments for their actions but failed to provide the facts needed to convince most of the people. The public lost faith in their leaders.

Noonan warns we need to be better prepared for the challenges facing us. People will need to learn to work together instead of against each other. She argues for a stronger foreign policy and more civil defense preparation. She specifically concludes that the Homeland Security Department should be broken into smaller departments will clearly defined missions and responsibilities.

Peggy doesn't disappoint

I read Peggy Noonan's WSJ editorials as often as I can - I love her writing style and editorial grace. This book is also brimming with her style and the topic is about political grace. Although I don't consider myself a neocon I do lean that way. I appreciate Peggy's comments and the way she thoughtfully expressed her ideas, however, the subject matter (politics and human interactions) seemed to drag on after about mid-way through the book. That being said, I would still recommend this book to any patriot. Her serious and thoughtful observations warrant serious consideration.

Fun from the Roaring Twenties!

Bulldog Drummond is a fantastic character who in many ways presaged James Bond. He is a consumate english gentleman in manners, a powerful boxer, a former decorated soldier trained in stealth and strategy, a wrestler trained by a Japanese master, and a huge drinker. Unlike Bond, he is never described as handsome, in fact, just the opposite.

He has a group of gentlemen friends with their own skills and assets that join him in fighting crime as private citizens. This collection contains his four adventures with the cunning Carl Peterson, a nom de plume of a European con-man and master criminal. Peterson is the Moriarty to Drummond's Holmes and both men have a grudging respect for the other's skills, and absolute emnity for each other's goals.

You should be warned that there is some casual racism in the books, not atpyical for the 1920's, but something that sticks out like a sore thumb today. If you can put that in its vile and proper place, you can still enjoy these well written, cleverly plotted, and rip-roaring adventures.

The author has given Drummond a sarcastic, witty, insult-laden method of speaking that is tremendously funny and unique. I believe a collection of Drummond's insults would sell on its own, and would certainly be useful in the arsenal of any gentleman.

An English mystery nostalgia buff's bonanza

I love the old cars of the '20s and Drummond's Rolls is perfect. I am fascinated by the old '20s era language, terms, and behavior of English gentry. Drummond and his friends give plenty of that too. The tales are really crime fighting soirees but always with the mysterious and evil Mr. Peterson to be discovered, stymied, and hopefully defeated.

Were it not for Drummond's almost super human characteristics England and its citizens would be in grave danger.
At times the reading is tedious, but you will always want to see the plot thicken and the master criminal stopped.

A very good read for young and old. Just sit back and enjoy the characters and the story.

We need men like Bulldog and the gang today whose love of country and way of life is heartwarming.

Drummond is great, but only 2 books are included here

REVISED 11-30-14: Some of the earliest reviews may be unintentionally misleading because this set from Ignacio Hills used to be called "The Bulldog Drummond Collection, Volume 1" and offered FOUR books (to which several of the other reviewers allude) for a buck. (A 2nd volume then offered TWO additional books for another dollar.) The current "Bulldog Drummond Chronicles" of only 2 books obviously is not as good a deal -- and inasmuch as those old reviews really do not specifically pertain to this subsequent Ignacio Hills edition, they should be removed. But no matter, because a huge collection of 9 (yes, NINE!) Bulldog Drummond books is currently available from Timeless Wisdom for only $.99, and THAT is the set I would now recommend. [To see it, type "Timeless Wisdom Bulldog Drumond" in the Kindle Store searchbox.]

Written as contemporary thrillers, the Bulldog Drummond books may be contextually outdated, but they are not stylistically so old-fashioned as to be unpleasant; on the contrary, they are (surprisingly) very readable and (as exciting period pieces) remain quite entertaining. I have thus far greatly enjoyed each that I have read. To get the most bang for your buck, however, go with the set from Timeless Wisdom; then let the adventures begin.
