"The Day Of The Jackal" features a plot you know is going to fail, a protagonist who you never know much about other than he's up to no good, and a henpecked hero looked upon with contempt by most of his superiors. The Bond lovers who made up this novel's key audience back in 1971 must have scratched their heads. But they kept reading. So will you.

Ian Fleming had his James Bond take on outsized supervillains in blurry circumstances that only slightly approximated real life. Forsyth took Fleming's Anglo love for the good life and attention to how-things-work detail, and transported it to a real-life setting, part travelogue, part "what-if" hypothesis. He named real people, used real issues, and presented in utterly passionless style a story that sells you on its utter verisimilitude.

Forsyth doesn't go much for humor: a trip by the assassin Jackal to a gay bar is about the closest to a chuckle we get; a politically incorrect one to be sure. He throws in some nice descriptions: "The heat lay on the city like an illness, crawling into every fibre, sapping strength, energy, the will to do anything but lie in a cool room with the jalousies closed and the fan full on." But for a first-time fiction author, Forsyth isn't trying to sell you on his lyrical brilliance. He just moves you from one scene to another with minimum fuss, a deeper brilliance given he was a struggling writer with no track record with this sort of thing.

Spy fiction was never the same after "Day Of The Jackal" came out. It became less a thing of fantasy, more a thing of life, because Forsyth proved that such an approach not only could work but work better than the Fleming approach. Even the movies' Bond adapted to it over time, for better or worse.

One thing not talked about much that first-time readers will likely get is "Day Of The Jackal" is at times a brutal book, unsparing in its detailing of government-directed torture, of casual murder, of the mass of luckless shadow people with their missing limbs and mildewed medals in which evildoers are able to move, unobserved by the hoi polloi. Reading it for the first time in boarding school, I was taken aback at how harsh a world I lived in, that things like this could go on. Read today, after 9/11, it's almost quaint in that respect. But it's never a nice book. In fact, the casual nastiness is part of its perverse charm.

First and last, this is a ripping good yarn, well told with a wealth of lived-in detail. You get the feeling Forsyth, struggling as he was, traveled every yard of the Jackal's long trail before setting it all down. It's not the only great book Forsyth wrote, "The Odessa File" came a year later, and he's shown flashes of his old form in the decades since. But "The Day Of The Jackal" began the art of spy fiction as we know it today; more than 30 years on, it's still the gold standard.

I enjoyed it very much, I loved the way he handled the characters, I have read this story more the fifty times over the last 30 years. Robert P.S. I also have the movie, of course it is not as good as the book for so much is left out.

Extremely relevant to today!

I actually have a different printing of this book, but it has seriously affected my world view, as it did for Mahatma Gandhi.

A small sampling of Tolstoy's insights to Christianity from this work, and how it is extremely relevant to modern society and current politics is the subject of the second half of one of my recent blog posts here: [...] As I mention in the post, the historical interpretations of scripture as presented by Tolstoy seem to match expert knowledge of the period, as the PhD Archeologist I met in Rome explained to me.

This book will change how you view and understand Christianity. Or, it did for me at least. But then again I was raised as a Right Winged, Home Schooled, Christian American Republican. Prepare to have much of that like completely shattered beyond hope of repair as Tolstoy analyzes the original meaning and understanding of many of Christs teachings, without the misrepresentations of the church. As a bonus: Gain valuable counter points for the so called biblical literalists you may run into from time to time. (Even more of which can be found elsewhere on my blog.)

Anyway: Tolstoy gets 5 stars from me! And presumably Gandhi also, given he modeled his work in large part on Tolstoy's explanation of Christs teachings from this volume. So if you don't believe me, take Gandhi's word for it!

what he puts forth in this excellent exposition of the sermon on the mount is both ...

While I don't agree with all of Tolstoy's conclusions (his rejection of the supernatural aspects of Christianity), what he puts forth in this excellent exposition of the sermon on the mount is both compatible with orthodox (traditional, not the denomination) Christianity, and utterly revolutionary. Anyone who reads this and is not convicted by Jesus's words to "resist not evil" simply does not have ears to hear. Tolstoy speaks with prophetic insight and truly lay's out what a kingdom lifestyle truly looks like. I would recommend this book to anyone who can take time to digest what is written within.
Between this and "The Kingdom of God is Within You" is what transformed me into a christian anarchist (really more along the lines of traditional anabaptist). I encountered these works while attending a charismatic bible college which pushed dominion theology very strongly, with Tolstoy's help, the contrast between dominion theology and the doctrine of Jesus became as clear as night and day. This books should be assigned to every student of theology if nothing more than a counter-voice to American evangelical conservatism.

Propaganda pamphlet inserted before text of Constitution

I, like others, had to cut out the first 8 pages of this before I could give them away (giving them out as party favors for a Hamilton-themed party). The introductory narrative and quotations are right-wing nonsense. Very disappointed. Should have waited for the better version before wasting my money on this and supporting a propaganda group with my $$. Urg. Look elsewhere. I did a quick comparison of the text of the actual constitution word for word with my own copy. I did not find any discrepancies with the actual text portions of the constitution or declaration of independence, but if somehow there are discrepancies this should be pulled from Amazon as a fraud.

The pocket size is very handy. I bought ten of these to give away to people who wanted to know about the Constitution. It's kind of fun to be able to discuss what and why it was written the way it was. Most of those who wanted a copy were teens. They were surprised and delighted to have a copy for themselves and we enjoyed our discussions.

"Christina, where are you?" Mrs. Black called. "I want you to sit and read to me honey."

Christina's green eyes watered and she pushed back her black bangs. They stuck up slightly from all the sweat. "I'll be right in," she shouted. Her voice cracked a little. She grabbed her mother's pain pills and placed them on a tray with some toast. "Okay mom, I'm ready," Christina said.

She peered around the door to see her mother's head wrapped in a handkerchief. Her mom was so skinny and frail. A big lump clogged Christina's throat. There was saliva stuck in the corners of her mother’s mouth making her look half alive. Slowly Mrs.Black's eyes fluttered closed.

Christina put the tray down on the end table and crept out the front door. She raced towards her favorite spot. It was at the end of the street on a private boating dock. She collapsed onto the dock and burst into tears. Her mom couldn't have cancer. She was only thirteen. What would she do without her mother?

About the Author
Christina Leigh Pritchard was born in Plantation, Florida but grew up in the Delray Beach/Boca Raton area. She started writing as soon as she could read and tortured her grandmother with the sound of clanking typewriter keys until her favorite Aunt Carolee gave her a Macintosh computer; a treasured heirloom as it originally belonged to her late grandfather who went out of his way to encourage and inspire Christina's writing. The computer is older than the writer but still works! (These days, it's an XP she creates with, her Aunt Carolee-a great inspiration and encouragement and yes, Grandma Jan gets a migraine if she even thinks about a typewriter!) Christina's passions are writing, reading, exploring, traveling, collecting elephants, her dog, Teacup, learning all about people she meets and the ocean.

this book was real. Characters real. Situations real. Emotions real, and the way issues dealt with by the teens were real. I recommend this book. In fact- I dare you to read the prolog and try NOT to want to keep reading!
